Helping to fund the homeless & vulnerable

In the same way that many hands make light work, many small donations can help homeless people in Maidstone to turn their lives around. We are once more on a mission to raise money to run Maidstone Day Centre for the homeless and vulnerable men and women who come to us for help. Like other households in the community, we see our bills go up and up and we are concerned as to how we will continue to make ends meet. A regular monthly donation of, £10, for example, grows to £12.50 if it is Gift Aided and having an idea of how much income we can expect, gives us the opportunity to plan ahead. It is a frightening thought that anyone can become homeless; we see people who until recently were in a steady job, living in a nice home with their families until the unexpected happened and there was no money left to pay the rent or mortgage. The causes of homelessness are many. It could be a relationship breakdown, spiralling debt because of a partners illness, redundancy, a loaded credit card that wasn’t a problem with two decent wages or unplanned expenses like having to replace a car, the only means of getting to work. There are many routes to losing it all and it could happen to any one of us. Happily, because of people who care enough to give, homelessness isn’t forever, just a difficult path that has to be walked, but not alone. We are there to help, advise and signpost to a better place. If you are able to help, please get in touch, you would be making a real difference. You can telephone 01622 674064 or email manager@maidstonedaycentre.org.uk Thank you for caring.

Today in the UK there are: 90,000 families in temporary accommodation; 122,000 homeless children; 52,000 homeless young people and 400,000 hidden homeless.

'Hidden homeless' includes the sofa surfers and couch hoppers, the people who stay with friends or family for a while until the welcome wears out or the overcrowding causes problems and they are once more forced out onto the streets again. The statistics include all those who satisfy the legal definition of homelessness but have not been provided with accommodation.

Official counts are regulated and risk assessed so that only certain places are deemed safe for the counters to look; and if there are under ten rough sleepers in an area then these are not included in the figures. Rough sleepers do not usually sleep in well lit shop doorways and ‘safe places’ they tend to hide away for fear of attack so official counters would be unlikely to come across them.

The way that the count is calculated is changing to recognise the actual problem. We will keep you posted.
